Traditional Education vs Progressive Education
From a Fundamentalist standpoint, Progressive Education and Traditional Education are irreconcilably opposed at their foundations.
The following addresses six core dimensions.
I. View of Truth: Absolute Truth vs. Experiential Relativism
Fundamentalism holds that absolute truth transcends human opinion; education exists to transmit God’s revealed, unchanging truth. Traditional education is rooted in classical texts and objective facts, requiring students to receive verified truth. Influenced by Dewey’s pragmatism, Progressive Education reduces truth to “a tool for solving problems,” holding that knowledge changes with social experience. To Fundamentalism, this places transient human experience above God’s eternal truth—a humanist usurpation of God-centered education.
II. Structure of Authority: Reverence for Authority vs. Anti-Authoritarianism
Traditional education acknowledges the authority of teachers and classical texts, emphasizing discipline, submission, and order, for “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Teachers represent truth’s authority. Progressive Education is child-centered, advocating the supremacy of student interest, encouraging the questioning of norms, and diluting discipline. Fundamentalism views this as indulging human sinfulness, destroying the biblical ethic of submission to authority, and cultivating rebellion rather than reverence.
III. Moral Foundation: Absolute Morality vs. Social Adjustment
Fundamentalist education takes God’s Law as the absolute moral standard, aiming to shape holy character. Traditional education clearly distinguishes right from wrong, emphasizing conscience and moral responsibility. Progressive Education tends toward moral relativism, treating morality as a product of social negotiation, with the goal reduced to “adapting to democratic society.” Fundamentalism holds that this eliminates the concept of sin, replacing soul salvation with social integration.
IV. Curriculum and Method: Systematic Instruction vs. Interest-Driven Learning
Traditional education values systematic subjects, foundational skills, and memorization of facts, believing that truth is accurately transmitted through rigorous instruction. Progressive Education advocates “learning by doing,” organizing curriculum around immediate student interests, opposing systematic lecturing. Fundamentalism holds that human nature tends toward laziness; if interest dominates, students remain in comfort zones, unable to access sacred truth beyond personal experience.
V. Anthropology and Object of Submission: Depravity Requiring Restraint and Submission to the Holy Spirit vs. Innate Goodness and Submission to the Human Heart
This is the most fundamental divergence. Fundamentalism holds the biblical view that man is totally depraved and requires discipline, restraint, and regeneration. Traditional education emphasizes submitting to the Holy Spirit and mortifying the flesh’s sinful passions, guiding man to obey God’s truth. Progressive Education, rooted in the Rousseau-Dewey humanist tradition, presupposes that children are inherently good and advocates submission to the inner heart, conscience, and inner voice. Yet Scripture declares: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9, KJV).
Fundamentalism believes that shifting educational authority from the Holy Spirit to the human heart is humanism’s most dangerous deception; based on this premise, education inevitably becomes a tool for indulging sin.
Conclusion
For Fundamentalism, Progressive Education is not merely a methodological difference but a worldview-level hostility—replacing theocentrism with anthropocentrism, absolute truth with relativism, submission to the Holy Spirit with submission to the human heart, and soul salvation with social adjustment.
Traditional education is precious because it acknowledges human finitude and depravity, insisting on the transcendence of truth and the legitimacy of authority. This is precisely the non-negotiable ground that the community of faith must defend to safeguard the next generation.
